The story of the art of dealing with others

There was a man walking around the market one day, and while he was examining things, if a woman passed by him, and she was carrying an old pottery jar over her head, the man asked her: “What do you sell?!”

كان هناك رجل يطوف في يوم ما بالسوق، وبينما كان يعاين الأشياء إذا بامرأة تمر من جواره، وقد كانت تحمل فوق رأسها جرة قديمة مصنوعة من الفخار، سألها الرجل: “ماذا تبيعين؟!”

The lady replied, “I sell local ghee. Do you want to buy?”

He asked her: “Can I buy it before I try it and make sure it’s healthy?”

فأجابته السيدة: “إنني أبيع السمن البلدي، أترغب في الشراء؟!”

فسألها: “وهل يمكنني شرائه قبل أن أجربه وأتأكد من صحته؟!”

While the lady was lowering the jar from above her head, some of the ghee spilled out and some of it spilled on the man’s dress. And between the pleas of the poor woman not to expose her in front of everyone, as they are in the market in full view of everyone, and that she will compensate him, and at the beginning and at the end, what happened from her was not intended at all and it was an accident against her will; However, the man did not have mercy on her in the first place.

وبينما كانت السيدة تنزل الجرة من فوق رأسها اندلق بعض السمن وانسكب بعضه على ثوب الرجل، والذي جن جنونه وانفجر في السيدة وقد استشاط غضبا مهددا السيدة ومتوعدا لها بالندم الشديد على فعلتها، وهنا طلب منها ثمن الثوب الذي أفسدته في الحال؛ وبين توسلات المسكينة بألا يفضحها أمام الجميع إذ أنهم في السوق على مرأى ومسمع من الجميع وبأنها ستعوضه وفي البداية والنهاية ما حدث منها لم يكن مقصودا على الإطلاق وقد كان حادثا رغما عنها؛ إلا أن الرجل لم يرحمها من الأساس.

And when she did not find a solution to her matter, she asked him forcibly: “How much is your dress, sir?!”, He answered her arrogantly: “Its price is 1000 dirhams.” And here the lady collapsed, and she said: “And who is it for me to bring you this large amount, sir?! I beg you to forgive me and not expose me.” But he still threatens her if she does not give him the price of the dress. At this moment, a young man passes by the woman, who appears dignified, and asks her about her condition and what brought her to this deplorable state, so she tells him everything that happened with her from the beginning until the moment he asked her about the one who made her cry.

وعندما لم تجد من أمرها حلا سألته بقهرة: “وبكم ثوبك يا سيدي؟!”، فأجباها باستعلاء: “ثمنه 1000 درهم”؛ وهنا انهارت السيدة فقالت: “ومن لي أن آتيك بهذا المبلغ الكبير يا سيدي؟!، أتوسل إليك أن تسامحني ولا تفضحني”، ولكنه لازال يتوعدها إن لم تعطه ثمن الثوب؛ وفي هذه اللحظة يمر بجوار المرأة شاب يبدو عليه الوقار فيسألها عن حالها وما الذي أوصلها لهذه الحالة التي يرثى لها، فتقص عليه كل ما حدث معها من البداية وحتى اللحظة التي سألها فيها عن الذي يبكيها.

The young man said to the man: “Don’t worry, I am the one who will pay you a thousand dirhams.” Indeed, he took out the money from his pocket and started counting it until he reached a thousand and gave it to the man in front of everyone’s eyes. And when the man was about to leave, the young man initiated him, saying: “Did you take the price of the dress?” The man replied, “Yes.”

قال الشاب للرجل: “لا عليك أنا من سأدفع لك الألف درهم”، وبالفعل أخرج من جيبه النقود وأخذ يعدها حتى وصل للألف وأعطاها للرجل أمام أعين الجميع؛ وعندما هم الرجل بالرحيل بادره الشاب قائلا: “هل أخذت ثمن الثوب؟!”، فأجابه الرجل: “نعم”.

The young man said to him: “Give me the dress then.” The man asked him: “Why did I give you the dress?!”, The young man said to him: “Didn’t we give you its price?! So the man asked him in a tone of sadness: “And I walk the road naked?!”, The young man replied: “What is my specialty in that?! Walking naked or otherwise, all I want is the dress that I gave you the price for.”

فقال له الشاب: “أعطني الثوب إذاً”، فسأله الرجل: “ولم أعطيك الثوب؟!”، فقال له الشاب: “ألم نعطك ثمنه؟!، فأعطنا إياه إذاً”؛ فسأله الرجل بنبرة حزن: “وأسير في الطريق عاريا؟!”، فأجابه الشاب: “وما خصني في ذلك؟! تسير عاريا أم خلاف ذلك، كل ما أريده هو الثوب الذي أعطيتك ثمنه”.

The man said: “And if I did not give you the dress?!” The young man said: “You give me its price then.” So the man took out a thousand dirhams from his pocket and they gave it to the young man, but he refused to take it, saying: “But I want 2000 dirhams in the dress.” The man was surprised: “But you You gave me a thousand dirhams.” The young man said: “I gave you what I asked for, so give me what I ask for in return for the dress.” The man said: “But this is too much for a dress like him. It is an unforgivable injustice.”

فقال الرجل: “وإن لم أعطك الثوب؟!”، فقال الشاب: “تعطيني ثمنه إذاً”، فأخرج الرجل الألف درهم من جيبه وهم بإعطائها للشاب، ولكنه رفض أخذها قائلا: “ولكني أريد 2000 درهم في الثوب”، فاندهش الرجل: “ولكنك أعطيتني ألف درهم”، فقال الشاب: “أعطيتك ما طلبته فأعطني ما أطلبه مقابل الثوب”، فقال الرجل: “ولكن هذا كثير للغاية في ثوب مثله، إنه ظلم لا يغتفر”.

The young man said sharply: “And what you did with this poor woman was not unjust?! You did not have mercy on her despite her pleading to you.”

So the man reluctantly took out 2000 dirhams from his pocket, and in a loud voice the young man said: “I testify that I gave this poor woman the entire money as a gift to her for the bad things he did to her.”

فقال الشاب بحدة: “وما فعلته مع هذه المسكينة ألا يعد ظلما؟! إنك لم ترحمها على الرغم من توسلها إليك”.

فأخرج الرجل من جيبه 2000 درهم على مضض، وبصوته العالي قال الشاب: “أشهدكم أني أعطيت هذه المسكينة المال بأكمله كهدية لها على سوء ما فعله هذا بها”.
