وكان للطفلين الأكبرين من هذه الأسرة حلم يراودهما على الدوام من صغرهما، فقد كانا موهوبان بالفطرة في الرسم، وكانا في كل يوم تشرق فيه عليهما الشمس يحلمان بالدراسة في أكاديمية الفنون ببلدة “نورمبرج”، وكانا يوقنان بأنه حلم عليهما المجاهدة كثيرا لتحقيقه إذ أن والدهما يستحيل عليه أن يؤمن مصاريف دراستهما الأكاديمية فبالكاد يتمكن من إطعام صغاره.

They decided to work on a lottery between them, and the loser of them must go to work in the mines and take care of the expenses of his winning brother during the four years of study at the Academy of Arts, and after the end of the four years he has to take care of his brother’s expenses throughout the years of study in the same academy by selling paintings or even working in the mines if the matter arises So, it was necessary to draw lots, and the brother “Albert Durer” won it, and so he went to study at the Academy of Arts. As for his brother, he went to the mines to work from that day to take care of all his brother’s expenses.

قررا أن يعملا على إجراء قرعة بينهما، وعلى الخاسر منهما الذهاب للعمل بالمناجم والتكفل بمصاريف أخيه الفائز طيلة الأربعة سنوات فترة الدراسة بأكاديمية الفنون، وبعد انتهاء الأربعة سنوات عليه أن يتكفل بمصاريف أخيه طيلة سنوات الدراسة بنفس الأكاديمية ببيع اللوحات الفنية أو حتى بالعمل بالمناجم إن احتدم الأمر ذلك، اقتضى الأمر بإجراء القرعة وقد فاز بها الأخ “ألبرت دورير”، وهكذا ذهب للدراسة بأكاديمية الفنون، أما عن أخيه فقد ذهب للمناجم للعمل بها منذ ذلك اليوم للتكفل بكافة مصاريف أخيه.

ومن اليوم الأول من التحاق “ألبرت” بالأكاديمية كان يبدو عليه أنه سيكون ذا شأن عظيم بعالم الفن، وحتى جاء موعد تخرجه من الأكاديمية كانت لوحاته الفنية وتماثيله تدر عليه ربحا مجزيا للغاية، وبعد أربعة سنوات عاد “ألبرت” لقريته وسط احتفال هائل به، وكان أهله قد أعدوا وليمة كبيرة لأجله.

Albert got up and thanked his brother for all that he had done for him, and told him that he had submitted his papers to the academy to fulfill his dream, but his brother told him that his hands had broken their small bones because of working in the mines, and that he would not be able to hold a small feather and control drawing fine lines with them, that he is happy and satisfied with what they have achieved together; One day, “Albert” woke up from his sleep to find his brother kneeling with his hands folded, so he hurried and brought his tools and marked his brother’s hands as a tribute to him for the beauty he had made with him, and he called them the praying hands to be evidence of the reason for his success and his outing to the whole world.

نهض “ألبرت” من مكانه وشكر أخيه على كل ما فعله لأجله، وأخبره بأنه قد قدم أوراقه للأكاديمية لتحقيق حلمه، ولكن أخاه أخبره بأن يديه قد تكسرت عظامها الصغيرة بسبب العمل بالمناجم، وأنه لن يتمكن من إمساك ريشة صغيرة والتحكم في رسم خطوط رفيعة بهما، وأنه سعيد وراضي عما حققاه سويا؛ وفي يوم من الأيام استيقظ “ألبرت” من نومه ليجد أخاه وقد راكعا ويداه مضمومتان، فأسرع وأحضر أدواته وسم يدا أخيه عرفانا له بجميل صنعه معه، وأسماها اليدين المصليتين لتكون دليلا على سبب نجاحه وخروجه للعالم كافة.
